Something Nutty This Way Comes
Nuts, not just for the holiday season! Candied nuts are good for snacks or appies any time of year — and also a great gift. These work pretty well with a not too dry rosé, perfect for a summer evening treat.
Basic ingredients, most of which you may have on hand.
Mixing in the whisked egg white.
Add spices, mix, and ready for the oven.
Candied Nuts
(based on this recipe from the fab folks at Smitten Kitchen)
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup white granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons coarse Kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pound walnuts/pecans/almonds (or whatever nuts you have available)
- 1 egg white, room temperature
- 1 Tablespoon water
Mix dry ingredients, set aside.
Beat egg white and water until frothy but not stiff.
Add nuts, make sure to coat evenly. Add the dry ingredients and mix well.
Pour into a rimmed baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
Bake for about 30 minutes in a 300F oven, stir the nuts occasionally so they don’t stick together.
If doubling the recipe, bake on two large baking sheets so nuts are well spread out.
